Dr. Rainer Gruessner has proven his dedication and ability as a leader in surgery over his distinguished 30 year career. He worked his way to the head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona.he has accomplished many “firsts” in general and transplantation surgery. He is a world renowned surgeon who is dedicated to perform life-saving procedures and to conduct innovative research. His field of expertise is primarily helping patients who have life-threatening disorders of the pancreas, liver, and bowel.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner was involved in the first split pancreatic transplant in 1988, performed the first preemptive living donor liver transplant in a child with oxalosis, performed the first ever laparoscopic living donor distal pancreatectomy and nephrectomy in 2000, and performed the first robot assisted complete pancreatectomy in 2012. All of these procedures are considered pioneering operations.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner began his illustrious career by earning his medical degree and thesis “summa cum laude” from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. He did his residency in surgery at Johannes Gutenberg University and then completed a two year transplant surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Gruessner accepted the position of Chairman of the University of Arizona’s Department of Surgery in 2007.
During his tenure at this position, he established the department’s reputation as one of the leading departments in the nation with the addition of over 70 faculty members, six nationally known divisional chiefs, and by the implementation of numerous clinical and robotic surgery programs. Dr. Gruessner believes in a minimalist approach to surgery to do the most good for patients.
